History: The Youth Development Clinic was founded in 1958 as a private, nonprofit, 501(c) (3), by a consortium of Newark residents, the Prudential Insurance Company of America, and the Newark Board of Education.

Who are we? YDC provides services to children in schools and community-based settings as well as in our Outpatient Clinic in downtown Newark. YDC counsels children who have significant behavioral and emotional needs to stabilize their behaviors and foster learning. YDC also provides consultation to school staff for supporting and managing students and effectively maximizing their educational attainment with minimal disruptions to the classroom.

What is YDC’s mission? YDC’s mission is to attain effective personal, family, and community functioning. Over time, YDC has adapted to changes in the community and in ways of delivering services most effectively, i.e., through best practice models that have been demonstrated to work. YDC established the Neighborhood Based Partnership Program 28 years ago in order to bring services to the places where families in need of them live, and where children attend school.Through partnerships with Newark public, non-public and charter schools, YDC is able to achieve success and overcome barriers in reaching the most vulnerable children and families.

Who do we serve? YDC’s clients range from infants to children of age 18. Nearly 100% of the children are from low-income families. We also see family members and caregivers of the children who are referred. Increasingly, YDC is working with families and children who are new to this country, representing many ethnicities and speaking various languages. All face tremendous obstacles in healthy living and learning in today’s environment.

YDC staff also consult and train allied colleagues, teachers, superintendents, medical doctors, and case workers.
