History: The Youth Development Clinic was founded in 1958 as a private, nonprofit, 501(c) (3), by a consortium of Newark residents, the Prudential Insurance Company of America, and the Newark Board of Education. For nearly six decades, the Youth Development Clinic) has been dedicated to providing behavioral health services for children and families in Newark, Essex County, and surrounding communities. We work to attain effective personal, family, and community functioning through outpatient services, school consultation and counseling, and personal development.

Who are we? YDC provides services to children in schools and community-based settings as well as in our Outpatient Clinic in downtown Newark. YDC counsels children who have significant behavioral and emotional needs to stabilize their behaviors and foster learning. In close partnership with educational and social service organizations, we work to meet the behavioral and mental health needs of local families,  using empirically-based and culturally-relevant methods for cultivating social, emotional, and educational well being – things we believe every child deserves.

What is YDC’s mission? YDC’s mission is to attain effective personal, family, and community functioning. Over time, YDC has adapted to changes in the community and in ways of delivering services most effectively, i.e., through best practice models that have been demonstrated to work. YDC  brings services to the places where families in need of them live, and where children attend school.Through partnerships with Newark public, non-public and charter schools, YDC is able to achieve success and overcome barriers in reaching the most vulnerable children and families.

Who do we serve? YDC’s clients range from infants to children of age 18. Nearly 100% of the children are from low-income families. We also see family members and caregivers of the children who are referred. Increasingly, YDC is working with families and children who are new to this country, representing many ethnicities and speaking various languages. All face tremendous obstacles in healthy living and learning in today’s environment.

An important part of our mission is to train mental health professionals interested in working with underserved, culturally-diverse populations. Toward this end, YDC  trains Masters and Doctoral level students for externships, practica and internships from universities in the tri-state area.  We have close relationships with Montclair State University and Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology.  Post-graduates from psychology or related mental health fields of study are provided supervision to attain licensure.
